Tools on This Computer

Snippbot Desktop ships with a bundled copy of the Snippbot device agent — there’s nothing extra to install. Turning this on lets agents on your daemon run tools on this computer, inside folders you choose, in addition to whatever tools already run on the daemon’s own server. It’s entirely optional: chat, agents and jobs all work without it, and you can turn it off again at any time.

Pairing has to be approved by the daemon’s owner in the web UI — a device token from the desktop app alone isn’t allowed to enroll a new tool runner, so a stolen or compromised desktop sign-in can’t quietly grant itself computer access.

  1. Start from the desktop app. During setup, or later from Settings → This computer, click Set up in the web UI. This opens your daemon’s Devices page in your browser.

  2. In the web UI, click “Allow this computer”. The Devices page shows a dialog titled “Allow tools on this computer.” Click Allow this computer to mint a pairing link and a 6-digit fallback code.

  3. Click “Open in Snippbot Desktop.” This fires a snippbot://pair-executor/… link. The desktop app catches it and shows a confirmation dialog — it never pairs on its own just because a link arrived. Click Pair tools to confirm.

  4. Choose folders, back in the desktop app. Pick which folders on this computer agents are allowed to use. Nothing is accessible outside the folders you add.

If you already run the Snippbot device agent on this computer some other way, skip this — pairing it again through the desktop app would add it a second time.

Once paired, manage everything from Settings → This computer:

  • Status chip. One of:

    StatusMeaning
ConnectedThe tool runner is up and talking to the daemon.
    StartingIt’s launching.
OfflineIt’s waiting to reconnect to the daemon.
RejectedThe daemon revoked its token; it has stopped and needs to be paired again.
    OffPaired, but currently turned off.
Not set upNot paired yet — see the steps above.
UnavailableThis build doesn’t include the tool runner, or you’re not running the native app.
  • Allow local tools — the on/off toggle. Turning it off stops the tool runner; chat keeps working either way.

  • Folders — the list of folders agents may read and write inside. Add a folder with Add folder…; remove one with the × next to it. Agents can’t reach anything on this computer outside the folders listed here.

  • Shell commands and Python — off by default. These can reach anything your user account can, not just the folders above, so they’re a separate, explicit opt-in.

  • Recent activity — an expandable log of what the tool runner has done recently.

  • Remove this computer — unpairs it entirely; the daemon can no longer run anything here until you pair again.

If the status shows Offline, a banner explains why and how long until the next retry — the daemon is unreachable, not your folder settings.

In a conversation, a tool that ran on this computer is tagged “This computer” (as opposed to “Daemon”/“VPS” for anything that ran on the daemon’s own server) — see Chatting → Tool activity. Files such a tool writes also show up in that conversation’s Files tab, labeled with which computer wrote them, separately from files stored on the daemon.
